The 146th Kentucky Derby will take place this year on September 5th. This is the first time since 1945 the horse race did not take place on the first Saturday in May. Kentucky and Derby are synonymous, and the race will be run with “fans in the stands.” That brings us to the most important question, “What to wear?”
It’s time to put on your fancy hat and your best dress, and don’t forget your mask. The newest and most obvious accessory will be a mask. Many designers are offering masks to match or compliment their clothing.
The shift from spring to late summer have many questioning what “season” of attire to wear.
This is Derby – don your brightest, happiest clothing. The Oaks takes place on Friday, and pink is the color of choice. Pink to honor cancer survivors, and to match the official flower – stargazer lilies. Derby Day shifts to red to match the run for the roses. A chic look is a black or navy outfit, and wear a hat in a bright color – don’t forget a coordinating mask.
Jumpsuits or pantsuits are a fashionable and comfortable alternative to dresses. The weather will still be warm in early September, so now is the perfect time to shop for your outfit. Also snap up summer sale prices before they are gone.
The Kentucky Derby is a tradition to embrace during this year of change and uncertainty. Whether you will be “a fan in the stands,“ attending a party or socially distancing at home – I challenge you to dress up and sing one song for “My Old Kentucky Home.”
