The Warren County Public Library is pleased to announce “An Evening with Dr. Robert Ballard” scheduled for Thursday, September 8 at 6pm at the Capitol. Tickets are free but must be requested online at https://warrenpl.org/capitol.
This renowned explorer may be most widely known for his discovery of the R.M.S. Titanic, but his other deep-sea discoveries and accomplishments have astounded worldwide audiences, live and online, through masterful documentation, in film and in print.
Ballard’s expertise is extensive, and his accolades are proof. His National Geographic Live Speakers Bureau biography details a number of illustrious claims-to-fame:
•A pioneer in the early use of deepdiving submarines, he was on the first manned expedition of the largest mountain range on Earth, the Mid-Ocean Ridge.
•Later he led an expedition off the Galápagos Islands that discovered new life-forms on Earth, a discovery that has revolutionized our understanding of the origin of life on our planet and increased the likelihood of discovering life elsewhere in the solar system.
•Following his discovery of the Titanic, he went on to find other lost legends in the sea including the German battleship Bismarck, the aircraft carrier Yorktown lost during the Battle of Midway, and President Kennedy’s PT-109.
•His Return to Titanic special on the National Geographic Channel was the highest rated show in their history to that point.
•A former naval officer, he is the recipient of numerous awards, including six military honors, The Explorers Club Medal, and National Geographic’s highest award, the Hubbard Medal.
An accomplished storyteller, he has co-produced numerous television specials about his explorations. In addition to writing many magazine articles for National Geographic, he has authored a number of best-selling books about his undersea archaeological finds. Most recently he penned a more personal account of his life, Into The Deep. This memoir, published in 2021, provides a behind-the-scenes look into his childhood and the life events that led him to a life of discovery.
Devoted to educational outreach initiatives, Ballard continues to inspire others to follow in his footsteps. Currently, he serves as National Geographic’s Explorer-in-Residence, as well as president for the Institute for Exploration and director of the Institute for Archaeological Oceanography.
Make plans now to join us for Dr. Ballard’s presentation at the Capitol on Thursday, September 8, at 6pm.
