I love my doctor, but my vet is amazing

Yes… Twila and I love our family doctor. He’s been our doc since we moved back to this area over 20 years ago, and in addition to being an amazing doc, he’s a nice guy and I’m pretty sure he’s a genius. He has taken great care of us all these years.

But, our vet takes care of our baby. Chrissy… or more correctly… Christmas The Cat… who adopted us on Christmas Day in 2009. We guess she is about 16 years old… give or take a year. Unlike us with our one doctor, Chrissy has had several vets during that time… a few at the family-operated vet’s office in and once we moved back to Bowling Green, Chrissy began to visit the folks at Greystone. But the point of this little thought is not just about Chrissy.

Let’s face it… becoming a family doctor is not a stroll in the park. It takes a long time, lots of smarts and no small amount of money. But, for the most part, you only have to learn one biology. But, wow, choosing to be a vet means learning cats, dogs and who knows what else… lions and tigers and bears, oh my! I read someplace it is harder to get into vet school than medical school. Not sure that is true, but I can’t imagine learning to care for several different type critters… and on top of that, they can’t tell you how they feel or where it hurts.

Twila and I have had cats our whole marriage… over 30 years… from a little black kitten aptly named Ebony through Sissy, Spot and currently Chrissy. They have all brought love, friendship and entertainment to our lives and caring for them during their lives and especially in their later years has been of major importance to us. As Chrissy is getting older, we find ourselves at the vet more often, and every time I am reminded of how hard it must be to deal with concerned pet-parents and take care of an individual who can’t tell you what’s up with them… all at the same time.

So, while I love our doctor and appreciate the care he shows for us as I age and Twila continues to get younger… this column is to say “Thank You” to all the vets out there… especially the ones in Paducah, Henderson, Glasgow and Bowling Green, who have blessed us over the years with care for our special friends. You are appreciated more than you will ever know!
