As Southern Kentucky faces persistent challenges with food insecurity, local REALTORS® are stepping up to make a difference. The REALTOR® Association of Southern Kentucky (RASK) hosts two major food drives every year aimed at alleviating hunger and providing resources to those in need. This April marks the 14th year of the annual REALTORS® Hope for Hunger food drive.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture food insecurity data, more than 15% of Kentucky residents are struggling with food insecurity, a figure that is notably higher than the national average of 12.5%. This means one in every six people in the region does not have consistent access to sufficient, nutritious food. The impact is especially significant among children, with 22% of children in Southern Kentucky living in food-insecure households. This statistic underscores the urgent need for local solutions and community support.
To help address this growing crisis, local REALTORS® are working together with businesses, schools, and nonprofit organizations to raise funds and collect non-perishable food items during the annual REALTORS® Hope for Hunger, which will take place this year on April 25th & 26th at the RASK office. The goal is to collect resources to be able to fill food pantries and school resource centers, which serve as lifelines for many families during times of need.
School resource centers, located in several Southern Kentucky districts, play a critical role in supporting students and families facing food insecurity. These centers provide not only school supplies but also essential food assistance, ensuring that children have access to meals outside of school hours. With Southern Kentucky’s high levels of poverty, many students rely on these services to ensure they do not go hungry over weekends or school breaks.
