The
New Year is upon us, and I am celebrating the arrival of my granddaughter,
Sloan. I am having the time of my life dressing her up in all kinds of girly
ensembles (as I did her Mommy before her). As I lovingly gaze at her, I see the
self-confident, well-dressed woman she will become. Sloan, the following is
some of my best advice for fashion and life.
Be memorable – Coco Chanel said, “Dress shabbily and they remember the dress. Dress impeccably and they remember the woman.”
Every woman needs an LBD – A little black dress. From country club to church, it will serve you well.
Buy clothes in the correct size – In other words, the size you are right now. And please go one step further and have your clothes tailored
Always wear a great coat – No one may get to see what’s underneath. And check the lining of coats and jackets; it is the best indicator of quality.
Own something in a leopard print.
Pearls look great with everything.
Monochromatic looks are chic.
Do not be afraid of color – A pop of red (a scarf, shoes or even lipstick) with all black makes you stand out in the crowd.
Own a sheath dress – Think Jackie O; this style is flattering to most all women.
Rule of thumb – Fitted on top, flare at the bottom; fuller on top, skinny at the bottom’
Hem your pants to the shoes that you are going to wear with them.
When in doubt on shoes, wear nude pumps.
“Fashions fade, style is eternal” – Yves Saint Laurent
And most important, my sweet Sloan, life is too short to wear boring clothes. Fashion says “me too,” style says “only me.” Dress up for yourself – you are so worth it.
