It was a challenge, but never underestimate the power of a hospice nurse, a patient with a wish, and a family willing to step in to help every step of the way.
When Mr. L began hospice care he was worried he would not be able to join his 16 other family members on their planned Disney Cruise. He was having difficulty breathing and his oxygen was imperative to his comfort, so traveling without it was not an option.
The Hospice of Southern Kentucky nurse worked tirelessly to arrange for Mr. L to receive oxygen refills while traveling down to Florida, during the cruise, and then on the trip back home.
“It wasn’t easy, but I knew it would be more than worth it,” she said.
Mr. L reflected on the last night of the cruise at dinner, and he took the time to tell his family how much they meant to him and what a memory this time together was for all of them.
After returning, Mr. L shared with his nurse, “Without the help of Hospice of Southern Kentucky I wouldn’t have been able to share in those memories with my family. Thank you for everything.”
Hospice of Southern Kentucky provides over $36,000 in charity care throughout the year and, as a non-profit, could not do so without the unwavering support of south central Kentucky. Through fundraising efforts, Hospice of Southern Kentucky is not only able to provide charity hospice care but also fulfill basic needs of our patients in their vulnerable times such as ensuring their pantries are not empty, the essential bills are covered, and their clothing is suited to their changing needs and abilities.
