The best word to describe fashion last fall was cozy (codeword comfy). Our wardrobes may be forever changed by all the loungewear we have been wearing. Designers continued in this direction for fall 2021, but not just sweat suits and yoga pants. Our favorite labels have elevated these comfy styles, bringing fashionable cuts to their designs. The fabrics are plush and sizes large, but the silhouettes have been refined. It seems like designers have read our minds – if we are going to invest in new clothing, we want it to feel special, but still be comfortable. Cozy never looked so good.
Trends to be aware of:
- Cut-outs – in a big crazy world, it’s about the little details. Try a turtleneck with a well-placed cut-out for the unexpected charm.
- Vests – layer over a long shirt to make a statement. Vests can also be worn alone under blazers.
- Menswear-inspired suits – long blazers with pants or skirts abound in tonal colors or matching patterns. Wear a classic plaid head to toe.
- Quilted jackets – the newest trend is somewhere in between a puffer coat and a track jacket. Enter quilted outerwear that looks luxe and is part of your ensemble. Keep your coat on.
- Furry friends – this year you will find chunky coats and jackets in a wide range of colors – from tawny browns to arctic white – to sink into. Also look for the unexpected brights and accent pieces – boots, belts and bags.
- High shine – this is your opportunity for that “go all out” moment. Find that special piece in a shimmering metallic to call your own.
- Covered in cables – knitwear is usually strong for fall, and this season is no exception. Cable knits stand out as the sweater look of the season.
- Boots – sleek knee-high boots emerged the winner – show some leg above, bare or encased in patterned tights.
A final word on color – black is stronger than ever, but don’t forget navy and brown. Fashion colors are oranges, yellows, green, lilac and dusty rose.
