We have a woman to thank for Thanksgiving. Sarah Josepha Hale, a prominent magazine editor, persuaded President Abraham Lincoln to declare a national holiday. Hale wrote him, “It (Thanksgiving) now needs national recognition and authoritative fixation, only, to become permanently, an American custom and institution.” As the Civil War dragged on, Lincoln needed a way to unite the country. He proclaimed that Americans should observe the last Thursday of November, 1863, as a day to heal the wounds of a nation. As we celebrate Thanksgiving 158 years later, we need to once again unite and heal together.
Most of us had to miss our traditional Thanksgiving last year, so this year feels extra special.
