(Think Bavarian curling, bocce ball, and cornhole on ice but without the skates)
No skill required
If you’ve never heard of this sport and aren’t in shape, that’s okay; neither are we. Put together your team of highly inexperienced skillet sliders, be ready to laugh and help us give away books to local students!
Curling, bocce, and cornhole can trace their origins back to the 1800s and further, but skillet curling was recently started in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Hack and Back, the “official newsletter of the Fergus Curling Club, the oldest continuous curling club in Ontario since 1834,” posted an article about Iron Skillet Curling in the February 2020 newsletter titled “Curling in Chattanooga Tenn.? Skillet Curling?” Their story described iron skillet curling like this. “It’s called Iron Skillet Curling and it’s kind-of similar to the curling sport you’re used to watching during the Olympics.”
Participant Fran Grier was quoted in the Hack and Back newsletter explaining how Iron Skillet Curling is played. “We throw the bacon press and then whatever team threw the bacon press then throws the first skillet. Then we alternate shots. And then whoever is closest at the end are the ones that end up scoring.”
