As my “elderly” parents and grandparents have passed away, it has become my privilege to serve as the archivist of our family memories. Recently I came across a file of my grandmother’s, labeled “Important Papers.” Within this folder was a sweet essay written by a young woman who had befriended my grandmother. As I read it, I was struck by the power of the essay, especially during the Holiday Season.
My grandmother was a warm, beautiful lady that always smelled of gardenias. She loved unconditionally, welcomed everyone into her lovely home and treasured her family. Her gift of hospitality and comfort left a lasting impression on the young woman who wrote the essay.
At Timesavers, we see many of our clients who are lonely and isolated. It is our privilege to enter their homes and bring joy and relationship into their lives. During the Holiday Season, it is even more difficult for them. Our care team works to bring them joy and connection every day, but especially this time of year.
In this season where we celebrate the birth of a child whose family found “hospitality” in a manger, let’s remember the “elderly” and reflect on how we might develop friendships and share hospitality with them. You may find the most memorable gift of the Season is friendship with the “elderly.”
