First of all, Happy Month of Love! I’m truly blessed to be married to my best friend and business partner and after 30 years I’m expecting the honeymoon to end… in maybe another 30 years. Of course, this is all because I’m such a great guy… NOT! It is because I was blessed enough to marry an amazing and understanding woman who, thank God, set her marriage sights very low! But, enough about that.
I am blessed to be one of the first to get to read all the SOKY articles each month. I love it that we are the “voices of South Central Kentucky” and truly have something for everyone every month. The variety of entertaining and enlightening articles makes SOKY one of the most popular media sources in the area, as is evidenced by how fast the magazines disappear and the calls we get searching for “my copy of this month’s SOKY!”
Having said all that, I don’t usually single out any of our writers because I believe they are all wonderful. In case you don’t know, we do very, very limited editing of our writers’ work. We want their personalities to show through in their writing. But, as we all know, the world is hardly normal at this weird time in our history and I wanted to point out a few articles I hope you will take the time to sample this month.
First of all, my good friend Ben Smith’s article on page 14. In full disclosure Ben is not only a friend… he is also our financial consultant. One of the things I love about Ben, besides his investment talents, is his great memory for stories and his ability to share them. Never meet with Ben unless you have at least one to two hours. But that’s not why I am recommending his article this month. It is because of his insight into the current condition of our world. SOKY is all about the positive in our community and Ben does a wonderful job of presenting a hopeful vision of our future together.
Then on page 8 is this month’s message from the Warren County Public Library. If you have not done any business with your local library lately you are missing something amazing. Talking about reinventing themselves. If you had asked me 20 years ago if there would be such a thing as a library today I would have said, “No way!” But not only are libraries still there, they are going strong, providing amazing services and options for entertainment beyond the “real” books they still have for you to read. The only way to truly know what all the library has to offer is to do a little research with them. One place to start is in the SOKY Events Calendar where you will see an amazing variety of kid and adult options for entertainment and information posted by WCPL, as well as many other area libraries.
And last, but certainly not least, is the timely article from our friend Kari Carr on page 39. Kari often shares interesting, entertaining and downright funny stories of life with her husband and kids, trying to help other moms survive in today’s crazy world. And, true to the “Month of Love,” Kari writes about creative and economical ways to have “date nights” with your spouse and why it is a good idea to do so. Twila and I are pretty good at having dates with each other but Kari takes it to a whole new level.
I feel a little bad just pointing out those three articles, but let’s say those are great examples of the wonderful articles that fill SOKY Happenings every month. Just check out the Table of Contents for many other great options. And, if you can’t find a copy of SOKY… they disappear quickly each month… most of our wonderful articles are posted on the SOKY website as well.
And, finally, returning to the “Month of Love” and to paraphrase an old rock song… “If you can’t be with the one you love…” then change your danged schedule – because nothing is more important than spending time with your best friend and lover… especially In February. Happy Valentine’s Day!
