Steel Magnolias, the celebrated play by Robert Harling that inspired the beloved movie, is coming to the Capitol, the second production of Fountain Square Players this season. This show is sure to touch the hearts of everyone who fell in love with these characters, six genuine women whose lives and challenges everyone can relate to.
Steel Magnolias, based on the true-life experiences of the death of Robert Harling’s sister, first debuted as a play in 1987 off-Broadway, but quickly garnered acclaim, leading to a touring production. It finally debuted on Broadway in 2005, but by then, a feature film adaptation of the play, which premiered in 1989, had already captured hearts worldwide, garnering awards and nominations for many of the actresses and the movie itself.
This is a story of six witty women who, when not getting their hair and nails done, exchanging recipes, or discovering the number of digits on famous historical women’s hands, spend their time getting to know the lives of each other and their town really well. Some of them may call it gossiping, one or two may call it just another day at the salon, no harm done, but all of them would not have it any other way, because in the end, they are all dear friends to each other. Southern charm and hospitality is the road by which this journey is undertaken, and not all the time lightly, as there are equal parts comedy and tragedy in this tale.
Director Chris Baker and assistant director Steven Bond, along with production advisor Jeff Moore, are bringing together a set that will automatically catapult you into a salon, a set design that will immerse you in every facet of the experience.
Fountain Square Players’ production of Steel Magnolias is definitely a can’t-miss theatre experience for anyone who wants such smart, witty writing that these characters will touch your heart before you realize it. This talented cast will have you laughing, crying, and laughing some more (then both at the same time, probably), so get your tickets as soon as possible! They are on sale now!
