As many of you have discovered, the Baker Arboretum and Downing Museum have become one of Bowling Green’s most favorite discoveries. Operated under the Jerry E. Baker Foundation, a non-profit organization, they have been open to the public since 2014, and continue to offer one of the most beautiful and picturesque places to visit in South Central Kentucky. Donations and gifts are accepted year ‘round, which helps to keep it admission-free for our guests.
Not only does it offer gorgeous grounds to stroll in, the Downing Museum plays host to local and regional artists. Carefully curated art exhibits change every quarter to keep visitors engaged, informed and offer them somewhere to appreciate the arts. The museum has one of the largest holistic collections of Joseph Dudley Downing’s work to-date. Yes, he was the brother of beloved Western Kentucky University’s past president, Dero Downing. The museum displays a rotating permanent gallery of Joe’s legacy.
Many have discovered the beautiful architecture of Mr. Jerry Baker’s home, which also resides on the arboretum property, just down the hill from the museum. On the way down toward the house, guests will see gorgeous fountains with vintage sculptures, and often the hard-working folks of the Baker Arboretum keeping the grounds looking spectacular!
What many people don’t know is that this is one of the most stunning venues to host events. Each area, whether it’s the museum, the arboretum grounds, or even the Baker home, offers a spectacular view and accommodations for most modest-sized events.
The museum has been one of the perfect venues for paid group tours, business retreats and small wedding receptions. Accommodations include up to 30 chairs, four to six six-foot tables, and indoor bathrooms. In past events, our guests have enjoyed utilizing the Doors of Life Room at the back of the museum, where there is an almost complete 360 view of the arboretum grounds, and natural lighting during daylight hours. Some even chose to use the small terrace just outside as well, with another beautiful water feature.
Our most requested area for larger events is the arboretum grounds. The area outside the back of the Doors of Life Room has the capacity to allow up to 150 guests, with outdoor restrooms. Many choose this area for their wedding ceremony and sometimes the wedding reception. It offers some lovely natural backdrops worthy of any bride’s most wished-for decor.
The Baker home is also an excellent choice for a smaller and more intimate setting. With the capacity of holding up to 30 people, the home offers a cozy atmosphere nestled just at the bottom of the hill. Also having beautiful landscaping, the Baker home has outdoor seating, well suited for small brunches and showers.
