Step back in time: Relive the 1960s at The Capitol!

In 1965, a quarter would buy a bottle of Coke and a bag of chips. Life expectancy was just 70 years, and while the first spacewalk took place that year, no one had yet landed on the moon. The Sound of Music and Dr. Zhivago were the year’s top-grossing films. The controversy of the Vietnam War and anti-war protests filled the headlines. The nation was still in grief over the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Civil Rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr. led the Selma to Montgomery protest march, marked by police violence against the demonstrators. Counterculture was all the rage. Societal norms were shifting and being reflected in movies, fashion, and music.

The Capitol presents Daisies.

At that same time, the British Invasion, led by The Beatles, was in full force. “Beatlemania” swept the nation, and the musical impact of the original Fab Four – John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison – changed the musical scene forever. You’re invited to relive that transformative time at the Capitol Saturday, March 8, with the Liverpool Legends! Their show, “The Complete Beatles Experience,” will take place that night at 7pm. Get ready, because this show will take you back in time and blow you away!

Liverpool Legends is made up of four talented musicians who were hand-picked by Louise Harrison, sister of the late George Harrison. Having toured the world and entertained at sold-out venues, the band has performed at the Rose Bowl four times and played at New York City’s Carnegie Hall. It has headlined its own production in Branson (MO) since 2005 and was designated as the Tribute Show of The Year in 2022. It received other awards including “Best Show,” “Best Band,” and “Visitors’ Choice Award for Entertainer of The Year.” The group members’ vocals are impeccable, their attention to detail meticulous. Their musicianship is masterful, as well, as evident in their recordings on the Grammy-nominated CD Fab Fan Memories! (www.fabfanmemories.com)

During this show, audience members will experience the complete musical history of The Beatles, starting with early hits like “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” “She Loves You” and “Twist and Shout.” They’ll take a Magical Mystery Tour down “Penny Lane,” through the psychedelic era of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” In “The End,” everyone will “Come Together” to sing and dance to classics like “Get Back,” “Here Comes the Sun,” and “Hey Jude.” Tickets are available to purchase at capitolbg.org

Immerse yourself even more fully into the 1960s era at the Capitol’s free showing of the 1966 film Daisies on Friday, March 7 at 7pm. The surrealist comedy is a Czechoslovak film that tells the story of two young women, both named Marie, who rebel against authoritarianism and buck social norms, a common theme from that era. The film is not rated.

The IMBd describes the movie’s plot like this: “Marie 1 and Marie 2 don’t give a hoot about traditional morals and social norms and seduce the men who are attracted to their carefree exuberance – mostly older men – with ease. They prey on their suitors’ purses and simply try to enjoy any fun that comes their way. Their escapades are a game played by the two boastful Maries as they plunge blindly from one adventure to the next. But their ‘depraved’ nature – as highlighted at the end by a moral underlined by Vera Chytilova – is just an innocent rebellion against the backdrop of a troubled modern world. The protagonists of ‘Sedmikrásky’ – embodied by the amateur actresses Jitka Cerhova and Ivana Karbanova – serve primarily as a demonstration of female liberation in the sense of the feminist currents of the time. The two Maries stand – albeit in an extreme form – for women struggling to survive in a man’s world.” (Source: www.imdb.com/title/tt0060959)

On another film note, this month’s Southern Circuit documentary, This World Is Not My Own, will be shown on WKU’s campus at the Jody Richards Hall Thursday, March 13, at 6:30pm (rather than at the Capitol). Free tickets are available through the Capitol’s website (capitolbg.org).
