The Samuel Davies Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in Bowling Green in 1902 as a service organization for women. Today any woman 18 years or older with proven descent from any ancestor who contributed either military or patriotic service (for example, taking an oath of allegiance or providing supplies to the army) to the cause of Liberty in the Revolutionary War is eligible to become a member of this nonprofit, nonpolitical service organization.
The Daughters take service seriously. As of this writing, the NSDAR has contributed 2.3 million hours of volunteer service to America with a goal of five million hours in 2024. The organization’s mission is to preserve American history, educate the leaders of tomorrow, and foster patriotism. To learn more about our history and exciting mission, go to www.DAR.org.
In support of that mission, the Samuel Davies Chapter has served at the Veteran’s Alliance Veterans luncheon, supplied a “Naturalization Station” at the Warren County Library for potential new Americans to get information about the path to citizenship, sponsored a window at Riverview Historic Home Museum, and recognized several historic preservation efforts in Bowling Green, among other projects. In addition to helping lay wreaths in the Fairview Cemetery, the Samuel Davies Chapter began working with Wreaths Across America in 2022 to honor veterans in the Bowling Green Gardens Cemetery. Each year, there is a memorial service, 21-gun salute, and Taps. Chapter members and community volunteers place the wreaths just prior to the ceremony. The 2024 ceremony will be held on Saturday, December 14th at 11am.
The NSDAR is Wreaths Across America’s largest sponsorship group, with over 1,000 DAR chapters participating in communities across the country. Wreaths Across America was founded when Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath Company, found himself with a surplus of 5,000 wreaths in 1992. He remembered a boyhood trip to Washington, DC and was inspired to honor the veterans interred at Arlington National Cemetery. For many years, putting wreaths out at Arlington was a private remembrance until a photograph on the internet went viral and inquires on how to participate in honoring veterans poured in. Wreaths Across America, a non-profit 501c (3) organization, was formed in 2007 to continue and expand this effort and support other groups around the country who wanted to do the same. The year-long mission of the organization is simple: REMEMBER the fallen. HONOR those who serve. TEACH the next generation the value of freedom.
The community is invited to participate in the wreath-laying or attend the moving ceremony on December 14, 11am at Bowling Green Gardens Cemetery. For more information, please email Samueldaviesdar@gmail.org.
