June 3-9 has been designated as National Garden Week by the president of the National Garden Clubs in an effort to acknowledge the importance of gardening and the numerous contributions of gardeners. As part of National Garden Week, the 10th Annual Fairy Garden Tour will be held on Sunday, June 3, from 1 to 5 p.m. We hope you will put this on
your calendar to attend. A special feature this year is that you can park your car on State Street and stroll up and down the street as you visit seven of the gardens, each featuring their fairies in unique ways. On your way to Lost River Cave, stop at the Gardener fairy garden on 711 Newman Way and the Atkinson garden at 618 Fairway Street. When you get to Lost River you can enjoy light refreshments while the children get to make a miniature fairy garden to take home. All of this makes for a wonderful afternoon for children as well as adults.
The cost for the event is $10 for adults and $5 for children with proceeds going to beautification and gardening education in our community.
The Bowling Green Garden Club was dedicated in 1935, is a member of the local Cardinal Council of Garden Clubs, the Dogwood District, the Garden Club of Kentucky, the South Atlanta Region and the National Council of Garden Clubs.
The club meets the first Thursday of each month at 9:30 a.m. at the Houchens Center, 1115 Adams St. in Bowling Green. For more information about membership, call 270-842-3416. At each meeting, a program related to gardening is presented and projects and activities are worked on to promote beautification, conservation and gardening education in our community.
Projects include landscaping around the two Blue Star Markers the club has places at the Depot and the entrance to the water park to honor those that have served in the armed forces. Other projects include delivering bouquets to shut-ins for “Golden Days,” caring for the Monarch butterfly way stations, “Plant it Pink” areas donating books on gardening to area libraries, doing floral arrangements for civic events and at local churches, presenting programs to groups on various aspects of gardening, sharing garden therapy at local nursing homes and planting trees in memory or in honor of someone on public grounds.
Do plan to attend the 2018 Fairy Garden Tour and perhaps you might decide to have a fairy garden in your yard!
Tours are from 1 to 4 p.m. and refreshments are served from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Birch Room at Lost River. Also at this location will be the children’s hands-on activity of creating a miniature fairy garden.
